Between 10 to 14 April 2019 Politehnica University Timişoara participated in the 47th edition of the International Salon of Inventions in Geneva - Switzerland 2019. Politehnica University Timișoara has won a gold medal and a Taiwan Prize for the invention ”Flash memory stick  on Ethernet interface", authors: Roland Szabo and Aurel Gontean, professors of UPT's Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies.

The invention relates to a portable flash memory on an Ethernet interface, designed to increase the transfer speed when copying small files and / or increasing the transfer distance. The memory according to the invention comprises an Ethernet male type connector, mounted on a printed circuit board having an Ethernet controller and a flash memory which receives the clock signal from a crystal of quartz and, optionally, an LED and a switch for protection when writing, powered by a 3.3 V or 5 V regulator, the power supply of the board from an electrical power source is made by means of a power socket, a battery, or a wireless power coil. This portable” stick” flash memory on the Ethernet interface can be deployed in existing systems. It can be powered from a voltage source, such as a transformer, battery or USB.

The invention has the following advantages:

  • The ability to have a ”stick” flash memory with much higher write / read speeds (even in many and small files) than the other ”flash” portable flash memory solutions on the USB interface;
  • Simplicity;
  • Compatibility with existing switch systems and PCs.

The Romanian stand was carried out under the aegis of the Ministry of Research and Innovation, the Directorate of Innovation and Infrastructure of CDI. At the 47th edition of the Salon took part about 800 inventors from 40 countries, more than 1,000 inventions were presented, 30 of them belonging to the Romanians.

On Thursday, April 18, 2019, Roland Szabo was among the researchers awarded by Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă and Minister of Research and Innovation, Nicolae Hurduc, at the Victoria Palace celebration. There were awarded with diplomas and plaques 26 representatives of research teams at this year's laureate International of Inventions in Geneva.

"You have honored Romania through the success achieved at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. The community that you represent has a key role in modernization, development and progress of society. You are trailblazers and your work contributes to economic growth and changes people's lives for good”, Viorica Dăncilă told the Romanian medalists in Geneva.
