Specialists in the field met at the UPT

14 June 2019

The UPT Conference Center hosted on June 13 - 14, 2019, the sixteenth edition of the National Conference on Metallic Construction (CM16-2019), a large scientific event organized by Politehnica University Timișoara (UPT ), The Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Department of Metal Construction and Mechanics of Constructions (CMMC), the Research Center for Materials Mechanics and Structure Safety (CEMSIG), together with the Romanian Academy - Timisoara Branch, the Center for Advanced Technical and Technical Research (CCTFA) metal construction and welding.

At the opening of the event, which brought together specialists in the field of metal constructions, acad. prof. eng. Dan Dubina, PhD, President of the Romanian Academy, Timisoara Branch, assoc. prof. eng. Florin Dragan, PhD, Vice-Rector of Politehnica University Timisoara, prof. eng. Daniel Grecea, PhD, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the conference.

The program continued with the communication sessions that integrated the following themes:

  • Novelties and trends in the calculation methodology, design, execution and technical norms in the field of steel construction and composed of steel - concrete;
  • Outstanding constructions: design, execution, assembly;
  • Behavior of metal constructions at extreme actions;
  • Building rehabilitation through constructive solutions based on the use of metallic materials;
  • Impact on the environment: criteria and parameters of sustainable development;
  • Metal Structures in Modern Architecture.

In addition to the conference sessions, the event was also attended by keynote speakers from the Technical University of Athens (Greece), University of Coimbra (Portugal), University of Aachen (Germany), University of Lodz (Poland).

The National Conference on Metal Construction started in 1973, in Timisoara, at the initiative of academician Dan Mateescu, becoming a prestigious university tradition with a highly professional character in Romania. Having benefited, from the first edition, from the significant participation of famous foreign guests, these conferences have been a meeting opportunity for metalworkers (academics, researchers, designers and performers in the industry), thus playing an important role in transmitting innovative ideas, scientific and technical performances, while being opportunities for fruitful ideas and fruitful debate. Until 1989, four more editions of the conference were held in Timişoara in 1979, 1982, 1985, 1988.

In a way, the initiation of this event in Timisoara and then its continuation through a series of National Conferences with international participation represented and represents recognition of the School of Metal Construction in Timisoara. The emergence and development of metal constructions in the western part of Romania and especially on the historical territory of the Banat province was stimulated and influenced by the emergence and development of the metallurgical industry in this area since the beginning of the 17th century. The first plant set up here in 1771 by the Austrian authorities was the metallurgical plant at Resita, where a steel workshop and steel bridges operated, which at the time included a design office.

Here began his professional career in 1935, the young Dan Mateescu, a fresh graduate of the Berlin Polytechnic School, Charlottenburg. In 1940, the metal workshop was moved to Bocsa Română, having Dan Mateescu as the leader. In 1941, at the Polytechnic School of Timisoara, the Faculty of Civil Engineering was established. Dan Mateescu was here as a lecturer in 1944, so that in 1948 he was appointed professor. In the same year, under the coordination of the teacher, a study and design center for metal constructions is set up. The synergy between design, research and student training continued and became a trademark of the Timisoara School.

Among the works that made the fame of the team led by Professor Mateescu are highlighted: the dome of the Rom-Expo pavilion in Bucharest, in 1963, the structures of the Iron Gates I and II, the Structure of the North Prague Thermal Power Plant, the covered velodrome in Tripoli, Libya. Professor Dan Mateescu was to become the first head of the Department of Metal Construction in Timisoara, founded in 1952. Under his direction and on his initiative was built in 1959 the Laboratory for Metal Structures, the first of its kind in Romania. Many of the solutions applied in the department's projects have been tested and validated in this laboratory. A reference achievement of the Timisoara School of Metallic Buildings in the current period is Bucharest Tower Center International, the tallest building in Bucharest during the period 2006-2012, whose resistance structure was designed by Dan Dubina, Florea Dinu, Aurel Stratan and Adrian Ciutină, a laureate of the European Steel Design Award, at European Convention for Metal Construction - ECCS, Lucerne, 2007.

The research activities, which were increasingly developed within the Timisoara team, were related to structural stability, plastic calculation, large opening structures, metal fatigue phenomena, and structural earthquake calculations. At the same time, it was practiced by the same team a very important activity of consultancy and design of remarkable buildings.

Starting with 1990, the staff of the Department of Metal Construction in Timisoara, which becomes the Department of Metal Construction and Mechanics of Constructions, within Politehnica University Timisoara, is recognized at national level by promoting the European calculation and designing rules in the field of metal constructions and by developing and applying innovative technical solutions and technologies in this field. At the same time, the Department asserts and actively manifests itself in international cooperation, scientifically and academically, consistently participating in research and academic programs and projects, technical committees and scientific and professional bodies.

Within this thematic framework, the research team, composed of teachers and PhD students, initiates, participates and / or coordinates major research projects at European and national level.

The research team from Timişoara has been extensively involved in the development of technical norms and supporting documentation in the field of metal constructions, financed by the ministry. He then participated in the implementation of structural Eurocodes and Euronorms in Romania, especially in the field of metal structures, between 2000 and 2010. At present, the team is involved in the drafting of new versions of the Structural Eurocodes (started in 2015), its members being present in 7 working groups and 4 drafting committees for Eurocodes 3, 4 and 8 (steel structures, composite steel-concrete and earthquake resistant structures).
