Clothing design collections inspired by the past
The opening of the exhibition of the students from the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning within UPT
The central hall of the Library of Politehnica University Timișoara hosted on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, the opening of the exhibition "Clothing design collections inspired by the past", based on the works of third-year students, from the specialization Furniture and Interior Design, Faculty of Architecture and City Planning within UPT, created at the seminar of the optional subject Clothing Design. The students, 25 in number, participated in an optional clothing design course, and the challenge was to create outfits inspired by various styles throughout history.
The course had a theoretical part, but also a practical one, in which the young people gave free rein to their imagination to create a unique collection. The students drew and created collections and materialized the design on a small wooden mannequin (30 cm). The collections are based on inspirational elements, taken from the past, from any stylistic period studied during the course.
The works were coordinated by lecturer architect Andreea Anghel, Ph.D., (teacher and graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning, UPT, class of 2008) and clothing designer Laura Chiriță.
"In fact, this course involves reviewing the history of the costume, from ancient times to the present. I thought of creating an activity that would somehow involve students trying to find more than just a story and go deep. This exercise inspired them, somehow, to find possible elements that they can take over, in order to create a unique clothing collection", said lect. arch. Andreea Anghel, Ph.D., coordinator of the exhibition.
"You can see the practical part and the result of the clothing design course. They come to me when they have already done the theoretical part, and I help them with the practical part, in my clothing design workshop. We choose together the materials that would suit the subject chosen by them and we start the actual construction for the miniature outfit that they have to make”, added the clothing designer Laura Chiriță.
The idea of the optional course and the organization of the exhibition was very well received and appreciated by the students, for whom it was a new, interesting experience, in which they had the opportunity to create something other than the usual subject, especially since many of them are already interested in the field.
The exhibition "Clothing design collections with past inspirations" can be visited until the end of the academic year, on June 7, 2021, on the ground floor of the UPT Library, from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 - 16:00, and on Fridays from 9:00 to 14:00.
