50 years of architecture in Timisoara
For the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning of Politehnica University Timișoara, the year 2020 marks 50 years of university activity of the School of Architecture in Timișoara, as well as 10 years since the establishment of the Furniture and interior design specialization. The double anniversary was marked on Friday, December 11, 2020, through an online event that brought together teachers, students, graduates, and guests, who relived memories from the 50 years of activity.
In the opening of the event, the dean of the faculty, prof. architect Ioan Andreescu, Ph.D., spoke about the challenges of specialization, especially in the beginning, about the stages, about the permanent reinvention and adaptation to the requirements of each period, but also about the extremely demanding path that follows, to consolidate the capital accumulated so far.
The rector of Politehnica University Timișoara, assoc. prof. eng., Florin Dragan, Ph.D., drew a parallel between the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning and the 100th anniversary of Politehnica University Timișoara, emphasizing the unique perspective that architecture brings to the institution, which engineering cannot replace.
A review of the 50-year history of the Architecture specialization was also made by prof. architect Vlad Gaivoronschi, Ph.D., who emphasized the avant-garde character that the specialization had from the beginning, through the famous teachers he had, through the works that became valuable parts of the Romanian architectural landscape, but also for the impact that the Sigma group brought to the cultural landscape of Timisoara.
Vice-dean of the faculty, associate professor Cristian Blidariu, Ph.D., spoke about the relationship between the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning and UPT, with emphasis on the internationalization of the activity, the competitions and prizes won, the partnerships concluded, the exchanges of teachers and students through Erasmus programs, research activity, projects in which the faculty was involved and so on.
Director of the Department of Architecture, associate professor Cătălina Bocan, Ph.D., referred especially to the students from the Faculty of Architecture and City Planning, talking about the course that a student has, from admission to graduation, about courses and competitions, about the activity in amphitheaters, but especially in workshops, about school and extracurricular activities, about the use of exhibition spaces, about parties, music evenings and study trips.
About the specialization Furniture and interior design spoke Dr. Irina Mohora, Ph.D., who underlined the great pressure coming from the economic environment for the establishment of this specialization.
Lecturer architect Marius Găman, Ph.D., presented the anniversary album "50 years of architecture in Timisoara" which, in addition to the history of 50 years of specialization, displays the evolution of the faculty, statistics, impact on the city, and the spread of graduates in all corners of the world.
A message of the soul was sent by professor Teodor Octavian Gheorghiu, a former teacher of the Architecture specialization, since its establishment within the Polytechnic Institute "Traian Vuia".
During the anniversary, the students of the "A4 Association" talked about projects, activities, charities, campaigns, and young graduates shared their experience, both as students and as young people on the labor market.
The anniversary continued with the awarding of the title of professor emeritus for six of the faculty teachers, in gratitude for their entire teaching and research activity: Smaranda Bica, Tudor Clipii, Cristian Dumitrescu, Teodor Octavian Gheorghiu, Radu Radoslav, and Liliana Roșiu.
At the end of the event, surprise honorary student prizes were awarded to Florin Buzgău and Andrei Chindriș, makers of funny memes, which went viral, which feature teachers of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, and brought smiles to everyone's faces.
