Politehnica University Timisoara continues the tradition of 100 years of excellence in education and research, but also of very good collaboration with the economic sector. In the field of hydraulic machines, professor Aurel Bărglăzan is the founder of the school, which academician Ioan Anton took to the international prestige it enjoys today. Thus, the partnership concluded by Politehnica Timisoara with Hidroelectrica SA is not accidental, but a recognition of the quality of scientific research and technological development in this field carried out within the Research Center in Complex Fluid Systems Engineering.

The two partners decided to develop a strategic infrastructure for scientific research and technological development, included in the Investment Strategy of SPEEH Hidroelectrica S.A. approved on 15.06.2020.

The project entails the realization of an experimental stand for the complex investigation of the energetic and cavitational characteristics of the hydraulic turbines, respectively of the fast transient regimes and of the start/stop sequences for obtaining know-how in order to substantiate the decisions of the refurbishment of existing turbines or the building of new turbines, respectively for the validation of technical solutions in accordance with the real operating conditions of hydro units.

This major investment lays the foundations of a Center of Excellence in Hydroaggregates within Politehnica University Timisoara - Research Center in the Engineering of Complex Fluid Systems, coordinated by prof. eng. Romeo Susan-Resiga, Ph.D., with the following main objectives:

    • construction, commissioning, and joint operation of research and development infrastructure for hydraulic and hydro aggregate turbomachines;

    • providing and identifying know-how for upgrading existing hydropower units and building new hydropower capacities;

    • performing standard energy and cavitation performance tests (according to the IEC60193 standard) on models of turbines and turbine-pumps for existing machines or for the validation of projects/solutions proposed by turbine suppliers;

    • performing special tests to evaluate the behavior of hydro aggregates in fast transient regimes and in repeated start / stop sequences, with the evaluation of life and maintenance intervals;

    • experimental investigation of the behavior of hydraulic turbomachines in regimes far from the optimum operating point, identification of the causes of flow instability and evaluation of pressure, flow, and power fluctuations;

    • development, testing, and validation of new technical solutions to ensure the flexibility in the operation of hydropower units over a wide range of regimes, in conditions of safety, stability, and efficiency.
