The support that Politehnica University Timișoara has given to sport since its inception, received a new confirmation. On February 12, 2018, Camelia Macoviciuc, Olympic champion at Atlanta in 1996, received from the rector of the University Politehnica Timișoara, Prof.Eng Viorel-Aurel Şerban Ph.D. at a festivity organized at the UPT Central Library, a medal and a Diploma of Excellence for meritorious participation in Olympic competitions, as well as for the representation of University Politehnica Timişoara at high-level sports competitions in the country and in the world.

The event is part of the series of actions honoring the glories of Romanian sports, participants or medalists at various Olympiads, which also activated in the Politehnica Timisoara club, which started in 1996, when the former players of volleyball Doina Moţ, Mihai Coste and Mihai Grigorovici, former handball players Alexandru Folker and Alexandru Buligan, emeritus coach Emil Grozescu and former pentathlons Marian Cosmescu. Politehnica University Timișoara will soon launch a volume of Timişoara sports personalities.

Camelia Macoviciuc (Mihalcea after marriage) began practicing canoeing in 1984, in Timisoara, at the Vointa club. Between 1993 and 1998 he activated under the colors of Politehnica Timisoara, which was the one in which he achieved the first notable result, which proved to be the most valuable of his career, the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, double lightweight oval (L2x), along with Constanta Burcica.

"I am glad to be present here today, I have formed here as a human, I grew up here and even if I live in Bucharest, I always come back with pleasure to Timișoara. I am glad to see that the people of Timișoara still love me and they are beside me", said Camelia Macoviciuc-Mihalcea.

"Today we congratulated her and we awarded our distinctions to a great Olympic champion. We are enjoying her presence here, we are glad that, so many years after leaving Timișoara, she remembers her top moments, and what is going on today, what will happen next, is a new proof that sport in Timișoara Politehnica has always prevailed, that sport is doing good with school and can improve the quality of life ", underlined the rector of the Politehnica University Timișoara, Prof.Eng Viorel-Aurel Serban, Ph.D.
