UPT celebrated the 100th anniversary of polytechnic sports
Politehnica University Timișoara celebrated on Friday, December 4, 2020, online, the entry into the 100th year of the polytechnic sport. Politehnica Timișoara Sports Society was officially founded on December 4, 1921, even though its foundations were laid by the first rector, Traian Lalescu, a great sports lover, since the autumn of 1920, shortly after the establishment of the Polytechnic School.
"Poli" has become, over the years, more than a symbol for the society and sport of Timisoara, and now, even if the period is not suitable for sporting events, the management of the institution wanted to emphasize, through an online event, the role that sport has played in Politehnica University Timișoara over the last 99 years.
At the beginning of the meeting, the rector of UPT, associate professor, Florin Dragan, Ph.D., spoke about the beginnings of the sports movement in the Timișoara Polytechnic, a premiere in the university environment at that time, innovation being, in fact, a feature of the oldest educational institution in the west of the country. At the same time, the rector of Politehnica University Timișoara reaffirmed his support for the sports movement, this tradition of the institution.
Next, former rector of UPT, current president of the Board of Directors of the Politehnica Timișoara University Sports Club, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, Ph.D., a true supporter of the sports movement, presented some of the great achievements of the Timisoara Polytechnic in performance sports, recalling some of the great athletes of the country, who linked their name, in one way or another, with Politehnica University Timișoara. Additionally, the rector of UPT highlighted the huge efforts made for the relaunch of the performance sports movement in Politehnica after 1990, but also about the importance it gives to the training of future athletes, since the junior period.
Constantin Florescu, president of ASU Politehnica, underlined the role that sport has in the training of UPT students, emphasizing the material endowment and enviable facilities in the field of sport that Politehnica Timisoara has, as well as the support that the university gives to sports.
Nicolae Secoșan, the most famous sports journalist in Timișoara, and, at the same time, a true friend of Politehnica, recalled some of the memorable moments in the history of sports in Timisoara, which is largely identified with Politehnica.
Dan Ionescu, director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports at UPT, Ioan Silviu Doboși, president of the handball department within SCM Politehnica, financier of the team, a true friend of Politehnica, Sebastian Novovic, the leader of Druckeria, the association of supporters of the Politehnica Timișoara team, professor Nicolae Neguț, former president of the Politehnica Timișoara Sports Club and a true chronicler of the sports movement in Politehnica Timișoara also spoke about sports at Politehnica University Timisoara, about its results, and its role in training students.
During the online anniversary event, a series of athletes and leaders of various sports entities sent congratulatory messages on the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Politehnica Timisoara Sports Society, among them being Dan Alexa, ASU Politehnica coach, Ioan Mera, ASU Politehnica captain, Vlad Caba, SCM Politehnica coach, Cristian Fenici, SCM Politehnica captain, Marius Sadoveac, SCM Politehnica goal scorer, Adrian Tal, CSU Politehnica director, Valentin Niță, fencer, from CSU Politehnica, Ionuț Picek, junior at ASU.
The anniversary of the sports movement in Politehnica ended with a soul event, the launch of the book "Politehnica Timișoara, a century of sports history", a true monograph of sports in UPT, from its establishment until now, a work that has as authors on Nicolae Neguț, Viorel-Aurel Șerban and Constantin Florescu.
