The Senate of Politehnica University Timișoara met on Thursday, November 12, 2020, in a festive meeting in order to award the academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa to professor engineer Hermann Rohling, Ph.D., professor at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, Germany, and member of the German Navigation Institute, at the proposal of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies. During the event, Professor Hermann Rohling gave a lecture entitled "Autonomous driving based on radar sensors".

Professor Hermann Rohling is a renowned specialist in the field of telecommunications, especially in the field of signal processing and estimation and decision theory, being a personality known and recognized worldwide for his contributions in these fields.

After defending his doctoral dissertation entitled "Adaptive Methods for Deafness in Pulsradargeräten mit Dopplerprozessoren" at the Technical University of Aachen, in 1988 he became a professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig. There he headed the "Department of Signal Theory for Location and Information Technology" within the Institute of Telecommunications. Professor Rohling moved to the Technical University of Hamburg (TUHH) eleven years later. Between July 2005 and September 2011 he was Vice President for Research at this technical university. In October 2010, he took over as president of the German Shipping Company (DGON). He has been an IEEE Fellow since 2006. Professor Rohling is a co-founder of Smart Microwave Sensors GmbH and is involved in over 30 patents.

Throughout his career, Professor Rohling has addressed the following areas of research: RADAR and telecommunications signal processing, self-organizing radio networks, high-frequency radar systems for tsunami detection, pedestrian detection and classification, target radio speed measurement techniques.

There is a long-standing collaboration between UPT and TUHH both in the field of education, through various Erasmus-Socrates programs, and in the field of research. In particular, between the communication departments of the two technical universities, there is a close collaboration materialized in mutual support of scientific events, student exchanges, collaboration on international research contracts. This collaboration began after the 1990s and developed through a Tempus program, which was attended by two universities in our country: UPT and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) and several universities in Western Europe, including TUHH. On the occasion of this program, Professor Rohling presented his first lectures in Timisoara, presenting to teachers and students advanced and very modern issues of telecommunications (especially OFDM). The collaboration continued through the careful selection of valuable students from the communications department of UPT in order to prepare the diploma projects and doctoral theses at TUHH. After several years of working in Professor Rohling's research team, these former students were hired by international companies based in Germany or Romania and came to lead teams of highly regarded experts in the leading fields of the electronics industry and telecommunications, some of them operating even in Timisoara. Regarding the scientific events organized in UPT, we must remember that Professor Rohling was actively involved in organizing the 2014 edition of the International Symposium on Electronics and Telecommunications (ISETc) being one of the plenary speakers of the conference.

For the entire scientific, didactic, managerial, and collaboration activity with Politehnica University Timișoara, for the remarkable results that materialized this activity, the unequivocal conclusion reached unanimously by all members of the team that analyzed his activity was that the award of the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Politehnica University Timișoara to Professor Hermann Rohling has a full justification and - on this basis - the UPT Senate manifested itself unanimously by supporting the granting of this title.
