For many years, Politehnica University Timisoara (UPT) has maintained a close collaboration with the economic environment in Timisoara and other entities, the relationship being beneficial for both sides: the companies thus ensure the human resources they need, and the university benefits on the one hand of laboratory facilities, and on the other hand, of internship programs through which the students of the Politehnica University Timisoara can get their bachelor's and dissertation degrees in the partner companies. The relationship is useful for students also in the sense that they come in direct contact with the realities of the economic environment and can apply in practical scenarios the theoretical notions they learned.

This line of events includes the inauguration of the new Honeywell laboratory (NYSE: HON), which took place on June 12th at the Department of Electric Power Systems, Electrical Systems Engineering specialization, at UPT Faculty of Electrical and Power Engineering. Laboratory C221 is sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the social responsibility program of Honeywell, a Fortune 100 software industry-leading company, by allocating funds for electronic equipment (eight oscilloscopes, four smart meter communication probes, 5 laboratory sources, 6 multimeters, 1 ampermetric pliers, 1 adjustable DC kit), IT infrastructure (8 computers and a laptop for reading panel counters), but also for repairs and modifications to the electrical network. The total value of the investment is about $ 35,000.

More than 370 students in the faculty will use the new lab for courses in Information Technology and Computer Programming, Electrical Measurement, Microcontrollers and Integrated Systems, Electricity Quality, Virtual Instrumentation.

The collaboration between Honeywell, a 20-year-old company in Romania, headquartered in Bucharest, Timisoara and Lugoj, and Politehnica University Timisoara, is not just about setting up this lab. It started in 2015 and included a sponsorship for the setting up of another laboratory at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications Engineering and Information Technologies, internship programs through which the students of Politehnica University Timisoara were able to achieve the bachelor's degree in the company, as well as organizing the visit to Timisoara of the Nobel Prize winner for Physics, Robert W. Wilson, Ph. D, who lectured on scientific topics and talked with UPT students within the Honeywell Initiative for Science and Engineering program. And cooperation does not stop here. Setting up a new $ 30,000 Honeywell laboratory has already begun at the UPT Faculty of Automation and Computing to be inaugurated this autumn.

The project manager, lecturer eng. Attila Simo, PhD, stressed that Honeywell's relationship and the setting up of such a lab helps students to better integrate into the economic environment after graduation. The students of the faculty had the opportunity to practice internships at the company, to carry out diploma projects, and, finally, after they graduate to get hired at the company. In fact, 80% of Honeywell Timişoara employees come from UPT (25% from the Faculty of Electrical and Power Engineering), and 70% of them work in R&D: designing intelligent meters, designing intelligent measurement systems, energy efficiency.

"The Honeywell lab is part of the efforts of the university's leadership to strengthen the link between the university and the local companies. We are glad that companies understand to get involved, both through observations related to educational plans and by participating with high performance equipment at the endowment of the university laboratories, which leads to a much better training of our students. Collaboration with Honeywell will continue, not only in the teaching area, but also in research, "said Prof. Liviu Cădariu-Brăiloiu, PhD, Vice-Rector of Politehnica University Timisoara.

"We are very proud to inaugurate this lab alongside our partner, Politehnica University Timisoara, as technology and innovation are the basis of our entire activity. Through our projects, we want to contribute to the development of a new generation of talented young people to become tomorrow's leaders in engineering", said Răzvan Cotiuga, General Manager of Honeywell Elster Rometric Timişoara.
