Acad. Corneliu Mikloși” medal for former UPT rector Viorel-Aurel Șerban

The Welding Association of Romania and Politehnica University Timișoara organized on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at the UPT Library, the symposium on "Welding at the Polytechnic Centennial". During the event, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, Ph.D., former rector of UPT was awarded the ASR “Acad. Corneliu Mikloși”.

The event was opened by Assoc. prof. eng. Florin Dragan, Ph.D., the acting rector of UPT presenting a short history of the Timisoara Polytechnic and thanked the former rector for the trust he gave him when he appointed him to the management team, as vice-rector. Additionally, a greeting message in the opening of the symposium was sent online by eng. economist Răzvan Bătrînu, the president of ASR.

The festive moment of handing over the ASR “Acad. Corneliu Mikloși” medal to prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, Ph.D., preceded by the reading of Laudatio by prof. eng. Dorin Dehelean, president of the local branch of ASR, who highlighted some landmarks of Professor Șerban's activity, a special personality in the field of materials science and engineering, member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, and an expert in welding and related processes.

Professor Viorel-Aurel Șerban gave a presentation on "Welding at the Polytechnic Centennial", in which the very important role that the Timisoara Polytechnic, through its teachers, led by Corneliu Mikloși, played in the development of welding and higher education in this field, a pioneering work at that time, which led to the placement of Timisoara in the forefront of education, research, and technology related to welding.

In addition, prof. eng. Radu Băncilă, Ph.D., from the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Politehnica University Timișoara, gave a presentation on “History and evolution of welded metal constructions at Politehnica University Timișoara”, in which he emphasized the close connection between welding and metal construction schools within UPT, both with prestigious national and international results.

The program of the event also included online interventions of participants from the country and abroad: prof. eng. Radu Iovănaș, Ph.D., (Transilvania University of Brașov); eng. Sorin Keller (General Electric Switzerland, director of the International Welding Institute); prof. eng. Nicolae Markocsan, Ph.D., (West Trollhatan University, Sweden); eng. R. Molnar, Ph.D., (Linde Gaz Romania); prof. eng. Dănuț Savu, Ph.D., (University of Craiova) and others.
