The second edition of the Global and Regional Environmental Protection Symposium - GLOREP 2018, a major event in the field of environmental protection, debuted on 15 November 2018 in the Auditorium of the Conference Center of UPT, which hosts and organizes the event, alongside the West University of Timişoara, the "Mihai I of Romania" University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Timişoara, the University of Petroşani with the support of the Balkan Environmental Association (BENA) and the Politehnica Timişoara Foundation.

The symposium was dedicated to the Centenary of Romania, so that at the beginning of the event an artistic program was held by students of the West University Music and Theater Faculty, who performed the national anthem, but also a suite of traditional Romanian choral pieces. The artistic side of the symposium was complemented by an exceptional exhibition of the plastic artist Mihai Teodor Olteanu. At the same time, in the lobby of the UPT Conference Center were also displayed homage panels dedicated to the one who overcame gravity, the inventor Traian Vuia (exhibition made available by the Banat Museum). Last but not least, the event marks the 98th anniversary of the founding of Politehnica University Timisoara.

Honorary President of the conference, prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Şerban, PhD, the Rector of  Politehnica University Timişoara, stressed in the opening speech the particularly provocative theme of the symposium, focusing on sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, ecological education, public health, topics at the forefront of the public debate. Also during the opening, there was also discussed the insufficiency of the university study programs in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as the lack of interest of the students for these specializations.

The scientific event is dedicated to global and regional environmental issues, being part of the BENA conference, annually, in the Balkan area, with a specific focus on environmental protection. The event included several scientific sections in which scientists from Romania and abroad (Albania, Canada, Croatia, Macedonia, Greece, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, China, Iran) debated topics in the areas of environmental management and sustainable development, public health impact, climate change and environmental risk assessment, renewable energy resources, urban planning, environmental education and public awareness. The volume of the conference will be edited and posted online on the conference page to disseminate as effectively as possible the topics addressed by the participants.

The conference is a contribution and a response from scientists to the overall research efforts that will need to be implemented to reduce the global warming phenomenon. Protecting the environment is a duty of honor for everyone, regardless of their preparation, age, origin or area of activity or daily living.
