Laura Borghesi, a third-year student at the Faculty of Civil Engineering within Politehnica University Timisoara, English Civil Engineering, is the winner of this year's £ 400 (about 500 euros) prize offered by the John Scott Foundation.

Engineer John Scott, an Edinburgh Scottish engineer with a remarkable career in structural engineering, is an old friend of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Timisoara, his first visit dating back to 1991, when he linked a professional and friendly relationship with the then dean of the faculty, prof. eng. Liviu Gădeanu, PhD. He has contributed decisively and in the long term to the good functioning of the English Civil Engineering Section (ICE) by supporting a series of individual documentation stages of students and teachers from Timisoara to the UK.

He is also the founder of the Scottish Romanian University Exchange (SRUE), a British foundation set up to support English technical education in Romania. In the near future, a branch of the EUSR was set up in Timisoara, its main role being to support Romanian students and teachers in the field of civil engineering through the exchange of experience in the UK and the stimulation of educational performance through prizes given to Romanian students.

Over the years, through this program, 40 Romanian students had the opportunity to study at the University of Edinburgh, 14 British students came to study at Politehnica University Timisoara, a period during which a series of professor exchanges also took place. The funds provided by SRUE to the Romanian Students had as their source the public collection, respectively, of the personal income of John Scott. Given that Socrates / Erasmus scholarships were insufficient to cover all Edinburgh student internship spending, the SRUE paid around 1500 GPB per student for supplementing scholarships.

After his death in 2012, John Scott left as inheritance in his will to students and teachers at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of UPT (in the field of Structural Engineering), 180,000 GPBs to support technical education in English. In February 2014, with the support of UPT, the John Scott Memorial Trust Foundation, based in Edinburgh, was created to gain access to this legacy. The Foundation's connection with Politehnica University Timişoara is done through a group of four Romanian custodians (acad. Dan Dubină, prof. Liviu Gădeanu, prof. Valeriu Stoian and prof. Mircea Georgescu) who decide by voting on the way of spending the funds.

Nowadays, John Scott Memorial Trust's action directions are geared toward financially supporting Romanian students (two students per year) benefiting from Erasmus+ Mobilities at the University of Edinburgh, awarding the best three bachelor's degree projects in Civil Engineering and rewarding students with the best results in learning from 2-3-4 ICE.

As a sign of gratitude for the consistent support given to Politehnica University Timisoara, the UPT Senate gave John Scott in May 2004 a Diploma of Excellence. The handing over of the diploma was made at a ceremony by the dean of the faculty, prof. eng. Radu Bancilă, PhD.
