According to a tradition established since 2016, every year, during the Christmas celebration, Politehnica University Timișoara awarded excellence in research and rewarded the efforts of master students, doctoral students, and young researchers, who have the most scientific papers published in international journals. In addition to the diploma and the plaque, the prizes also include a support grant worth 1000 euros, granted from the university's income.

Taking the pandemic into account, the UPT management decided that the awards should be given in a restricted, festive setting, on December 15, 2020. The ceremony took place around the decorated Christmas tree in the hall of the UPT Library, with carols performed by the Politehnica choir echoing in the background.

The host and moderator of the event was prof. eng. Sorin Mușuroi, Ph.D., vice-rector, who, after a short presentation, gave the floor to the colleagues from the UPT management who each offered the excellence awards, as follows:

  • Assoc. prof. eng. Alina Dumitrel, Ph.D., vice-rector of UPT, offered the “Excellence in Research” award, in the category of master students, to Miss Delia Anca Boțilă.
  • Prof. eng. Radu-Emil Precup, Ph.D., director of the Council for Doctoral Studies, offered the "Excellence in Research" award, in the category of Ph.D. students, to Mrs. Melinda Vajda.
  • Prof. eng. Liviu Marșavina, Ph.D., vice-rector of UPT, offered the “Excellence in Research” award, in the category of young researchers, under 40 years old, to prof. eng. Bogdan Groza, Ph.D.

This year, several new awards were introduced, marking the Centenary of Politehnica Timișoara University, highlighting some of the major development directions of the institution, marking the transition to the "Polytechnic of the new century":

  • Prof. eng. Daniel Dan, Ph.D., UPT vice-rector, presented the “Excellence in Internationalization” award to prof. economist Claudiu Albulescu, Ph.D., director of the International Relations Department, for his efforts to restructure and coordinate the department's work.
  • Assoc. prof. Liviu Cădariu-Brăiloiu, Ph.D., vice-rector of UPT, offered the “Excellence in Digitization” award to Dr. Eng. Diana Andone, Ph.D., director of the UPT e-Learning Center, for all the effort and support provided to migrate the educational process from the traditional system to the online one.
  •  Rector of UPT, assoc. prof. eng. Florin Drăgan, Ph.D., offered a special award, the "Centenary Award", established on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the university to academician Ion Boldea, a true role model for all teachers, for excellence in academic and research.
