Politehnica University Timisoara launches the Interactive Digital Museum of Information Science and Technology

Politehnica University Timisoara, through the Multimedia Center, launched the Interactive Digital Museum of Information Science and Technology - a project that aims to bring to the forefront the technical and scientific premieres of Timișoara, promoting local and regional potential in education, science, and technology and contributing to the education of young people, stimulating research and development in these fields.

The interactive digital museum of UPT can be accessed through the web application https://muzeu.upt.ro/, adapted for both desktop and mobile devices and includes a series of digital multimedia elements designed to display equipment with historical value in an interactive combination, with information and media resources from the archive, but also current, stimulating creativity, through a series of virtual tours with digital, interactive and complex elements, focusing on both the history of technology and innovations current sciences.

 

Interactive simulations, VR and virtual tours

Users can visit the UPT Interactive Digital Museum online, discovering the Timisoara awards gallery in the field of information technologies, but also the exhibits located in the virtual UPT Museum, in a complex experience with digital interactive simulations, 360-degree images, video and 3D, and elements of virtual reality, accompanied by informative texts about the history and technology behind them.
Also through the web application, users can participate in a series of virtual tours including the MECIPT Tour (Electronic Computing Machine of the Timișoara Polytechnic Institute) - the first alphanumeric computer in Romania, Future Technologies Tour: augmented and virtual reality, Science Museums Tour, and technology from around the world.
The Multimedia section of the web application offers a series of documentary and educational films, where users can discover information about state-of-the-art technologies and address topics such as artificial intelligence, robots, or quantum computing.
The digital materials produced following the project will be uploaded on the Timișoara 2021 data platform (https://data.timisoara2021.ro/), which allows the interconnection with cultural data on the European platform, exponentially increasing their visibility.

 

UPT interactive digital museum - a model of good practices

In the medium and long term, the project launched by UPT aims to become a role model for similar museums, which currently lacks the digital component. It will be accessible as a body of good practice regarding the collection and structuring of data from museum archives, the generation of digital materials and museum visit scenarios in a virtual and interactive format, and the publication of developed materials as open data with free access.
The project is coordinated by prof. eng. Radu Vasiu, Ph.D., the president of the UPT Senate, and Silviu Vert, Ph.D., eng. Mugur Mocofan, Ph.D., and Ph.D. student eng. Oana Rotaru - members of the UPT Multimedia Center.

 

UPT 100 - a century of higher education in Banat

The launch of the UPT Interactive Digital Museum is part of the series of events dedicated to the Centenary of Politehnica University Timișoara - Politehnica 100 and the 100th anniversary of university education in Banat, celebrating the coherent and innovative development of online education at the university.
The project was carried out with the support of the Timişoara City Hall and the Timişoara Local Council. The project comes in support of the programs developed within Timisoara - European Capital of Culture in 2023.
