Professor Ewald A. Werner, Doctor Honoris Causa of UPT
The beautiful hall of the Senate of Politehnica University Timisoara was filled on Thursday, October 3, 2019, on the occasion of the ceremony of granting the highest distinction that can be granted by a higher education institution, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa. The Senate of Politehnica University Timisoara has decided to award the academic title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Prof. Ewald A. Werner, PhD, Director of the Department of Materials Science and Materials Mechanics at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, Head of the State Laboratory for Testing Materials from Mechanical Engineering, Germany and an old friend of the Polytechnic from Timisoara.
Professor Ewald A. Werner is a renowned specialist in the field of materials science and mechanics, especially metals - steel, nickel, titanium, aluminum alloys, etc., being a well-known and recognized personality worldwide for his contributions in these fields.
Professor Werner attended the Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria) University in 1975, in the field of Materials Science and Metal Physics, which he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1980. He also studied Mathematics at the University of Graz (Austria) during the period 1981-1982. After graduating until 1984, he worked at the Austrian Academy of Sciences at the Erich- Schmid Institute of Solid State Physics . He obtained his doctorate degree at Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria) in 1984 with the thesis entitled: Plasticity of Single- and Dual- phase Brasses .
Throughout his research career, Professor Werner addressed the following fields of research: metal alloys and the design of their technologies, extrusion mechanisms, electron microscopy, quantitative metallography, mechanics of rupture, X-ray diffraction, numerical methods in micromechanical modeling, development, development and testing of new materials: TRIP alloys, metal matrix composites, aluminum alloys, nickel, titanium with applications in the automotive, aeronautical, electronic and biomedical industries.
Professor Werner is co-author of five books in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Technology, author (co-author) of over 250 scientific papers (over 150 SCOPUS indexed and one h-index 26) and over 440 invited presentations in many countries. Europeans in the US, China and Japan.
In 2010 he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Salzburg (Austria).
Between Politehnica University Timișoara and TU Munich there is a long-term collaboration both in the educational field through various Erasmus-Socrates programs, but also in the field of research.
Particularry, between the Department of Mechanical Engineering at TU Munich and the Departments of Mechanics and Resistance of Materials and Engineering of Materials and Manufacturing at Politehnica University Timisoara, there is a close relationship of collaboration materialized through: mutual support of scientific manifestations, exchanges of experience between researchers, exchanges at the level of UPT and TU Munich management to identify future collaboration directions, student exchanges within ERASMUS + programs. Also prof. eng. Ewald A. Werner, PhD, has offered to donate to the UPT Library the collection of the journal Materials Science and Engineering, whose publisher he is.
For the entire scientific, didactic, managerial and collaborative activity with Politehnica University Timisoara, for the remarkable results through which this activity materialized, the unequivocal conclusion reached by all the members of the collective that analyzed his activity was to award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Politehnica University Timişoara to prof. eng. Ewald A. Werner, PhD, has full justification and, on this basis, the UPT Senate has unanimously supported the granting of this title.
