The highest distinction for the Rector of UPT

Rector of Politehnica University Timișoara, Prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, PhD, was conferred on Thursday, February 27th, 2020, by University Politehnica of Bucharest, the highest distinction that can be granted by an institution of higher education - the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.
The solemn ceremony highlighted the merits prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Şerban, PhD, both in the scientific plan and in the academic management, as well as in boosting the collaboration relations between Politehnica University Timișoara and the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. "For the entire scientific activity in teaching, management and collaboration with our university for outstanding results which resulted from this activity, the Senate of the University Politehnica of Bucharest decided to grant the highest academic title Doctor Honoris Causa, to professor Viorel-Aurel Șerban”, is mentioned, among others, in the motivation of granting the title.
The ceremony included the presentation of the teaching and research career of Prof. eng. Viorel-Aurel Șerban, PhD. Graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the "Traian Vuia" Polytechnic Institute of Timișoara (today Politehnica University Timișoara), the promotion of 1978, he obtained the title of doctor engineer in 1992, and from 2007 he is doctoral supervisor in the field of Materials Engineering, in which he coordinated 20 PhD students who have been awarded the title of doctor in engineering sciences. Throughout his career, Professor Viorel-Aurel Șerban has approached several areas of research in the field of materials science and engineering, especially metal and alloys, he is the author of over 250 scientific works, 9 inventions, participated in achieving 66 research contracts, he was involved in organizing national and international conferences and workshops.
The didactic and research activities were supplemented by a rich administrative and managerial activity, culminating with the election as rector of Politehnica University Timișoara, for two terms, between 2012-2020. In this capacity he lays the foundations of the Romanian Alliance of Technical Universities in Romania - ARUT, in 2016, together with the rectors of the other universities of profile, becoming also its first president, a position he holds today.
During the ceremony, the efforts made and the important contribution to the development of international cooperation were mentioned, by signing numerous agreements with universities and research institutes, as well as the rich activity carried out in sport and the cultural plan.
