Treatment of soil contaminated by mining

On Thursday, September 5, 2019, in Timisoara, a conference was held to open the Project for the implementation of green solutions for soil decontamination in the Romania-Serbia cross-border area, where mining activities are undergoing, launched by Politehnica University Timisoara (Romania) in partnership with the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Bor (Serbia).

On this occasion, the Joint Coordination Committee, composed of leading experts from both sides, met to identify the actions and stages of the implementation of the cross-border network of education and research, capable of implementing actions for environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources in the area. The financing of the network activities is possible thanks to the project "Formation of the network to increase the environmental protection measures in the field of pollution caused by the mining activity in the cross-border areas" (" Forming of network for enhancing environmental protection from pollutants of mining cross border areas "), acronym NETMIN, eMS no. RORS-308, within the Interreg- IPA Program for Romania-Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation.

The project is financed 85% by the European Union and aims, in addition to the scientific component, to evaluate the quality of the environment and to study the green technologies for the treatment of soils contaminated with heavy metals, to attract the local communities in adopting measures that will contribute to reduce pollution caused by mining, thus supporting the development of sustainable policies for the use of natural resources.
