The European Researchers Night, an event initiated in 2005 and which enjoyed tremendous success, took place this year on 28 September, in 300 cities around the world and 20 in Romania. In Timisoara, the European Researchers' Night took place at the Nokia Campus.

Of the cities in the country, Timisoara had the most exhibitors, about 50, and Politehnica University Timișoara respected it’s reputation of advanced education and research institution, attending the event with several works that prove the level at UPT works.

Among the works presented by UPT students and teachers, we mention an automated irrigation system with remote monitoring and command (Alina Zgripcea, under the guidance of professors Gheorghe-Daniel Andreescu and Horaţiu Gurban), a wireless controlled LED rotation display system, based on sight persistence (Szabolcs Gergely under the guidance of professor Mihai Micea), an innovative and fully-open highway bridge with three openings (Andrea Bartki and Rebeca Carolina Dirschl, under the guidance of professor Edward Petzek), an object detection system using deep neural networks (Patrik Schmiedt, under professor Cătălin Căleanu), a two-input hybrid converter (Mihăiţă Constantin Gireadă, under the guidance of professor Octavian Cornea), a wireless robotic arm moving device (Daniel Cătălin Haţegan under the guidance of professor Raluca Rob ), a demonstration stand for the study of the Mercedes variable distribution systems (Alin Buzdugan, under the guidance of professors Sorin Raţiu and Corneliu Birtok Băneasă), overabravers for boosting the performance of internal combustion engines (an award winning invention by a research team of the Faculty of Engineering in Hunedoara). The event was also attended by the already-known VisionX student team, which has developed a system based on artificial intelligence, which can read, interpret and diagnose on the basis of radiographs, for which it received a series of national and international awards and with which they also took part in the Imagine Cup World final in the United States. A special case is a student who was born deaf-mute and benefited from a cochlear implant only when he was 15 years old. Now he is a student at UPT, Medical Engineering, and he built a 3D printer on his own, and as an application he has presented and 3D printed at the event several cochlear models, particularly useful in medicine (Mihai Petru Marghitas, under the guidance of the professor Antonius Stanciu). An unprecedented work is also MicroU, made by students at the Hunedoara Engineering Faculty, an ecological and multifunctional alternative to eyeglasses rag, with a protective and cleaning function, without resorting to wet, hard-to-recycle napkins . The projects of the Medical Informatics Board of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science were also very successful in the event. Students can interact directly with the views seen with the VR headphones, through Leap Motion's "read" gestures. Another project proposes using the same Leap Motion device to control a 3D image displayed through a pseudo-holographic device. Another proposed system allows for a possible malignant posture that can hide a problem in the spine based on scanning the posture of the human body in orthostatism. Another application allows patients to be assisted in medical gymnastics and physiotherapy in general by pursuing gymnastics exercises in place of physicians and indicating whether the exercises have been performed correctly. Students have also developed a health surveillance system that monitors the evolution of physiological parameters (ECG, temperature, pulse) through sensor measurements.

"The ten faculties of Politehnica University Timisoara have chosen their best bachelors projects since July, and the prototypes that were created, the equipments made by the students have been exposed on this occasion", said lect. Liviu Cădariu-Brăiloiu, PhD, vice-rector of UPT.
