Distinctions and awards
We support professional excellence and recognise the achievements of our academic community. Through merit awards, distinctions and annual prizes, we recognise excellence in teaching, research and administration, as well as the efforts of those who contribute to the university’s development and reputation.
Merit awards for academic and support staff
Merit awards recognise outstanding professional achievements, contributions to improving the educational process and involvement in institutional development.
They are available to academic staff at all academic ranks, professional support staff, as well as research and technical staff.
Award criteria
Merit awards may be granted for:
- Excellence in teaching and contributions to the quality of education;
- Achievements in research and innovation;
- Participation in projects, committees and institutional initiatives;
- Administrative activities and technical support within faculties or departments.
Procedure and timetable
The process takes place annually, in accordance with regulations approved by the UPT Senate, and includes:
- Announcement of the available awards;
- Submission of applications;
- Assessment of applications by faculty or department committees;
- Final approval by the UPT Senate.
The relevant documents and timetable for each year are communicated through faculties and UPT’s internal channels.
The “Ioan de Sabata” Awards
The “Ioan de Sabata” Awards are presented annually at a ceremonial event to recognise academic and scientific excellence at UPT. Named after one of Politehnica Timisoara’s distinguished professors, they are among the university’s most prestigious awards.
The awards may be presented to academic staff and researchers for significant contributions to academic and scientific activity, as well as to undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students for outstanding achievements.
Award criteria
The “Ioan de Sabata” Awards recognise:
- Outstanding academic achievements;
- High-impact research;
- Valuable projects, publications and participation in competitions;
- Notable contributions in technical, scientific or educational fields.

The regulations, application forms and announcements for each year are published by UPT and communicated through the faculties and the UPT Senate.
